Let us continue with giving that pleases God. With the wave of the prosperity gospel, we were told to give to the church until it hurts. Some people went to church with the last money they had and were persuaded to give it all to receive manifold returns immediately from God. Many became stranded and had to beg for transportation or walk home. I fell victim twice because I was persuaded that God would do something about my financial hardships at the time. After many such acts of giving through tithes and offerings, with nothing happening and things getting worse, some stopped going to church or began giving reluctantly. Unless we understand the root of the problem that makes people reluctant to give or stop giving altogether, we may not follow God's mind as we go on.

The people were turned into reluctant givers or non-givers altogether. The first condition for giving to be pleasing to God in New Testament times is love, as we saw two days ago. The next is to give cheerfully, not out of grudge or compulsion. Be open to God's healing as we go ahead.

When the Holy Spirit brought our Scripture for today to my attention and I thought about it deeply, I realised that God wants me to give, not to hurt me or make some pastors or men of God super-rich, but to keep the channel of His wealth and blessings spreading to everyone. Read 2 Corinthians 6:6–12 for further information. I leave us with this to consider and share whatever insight the Holy Spirit gives you. We continue tomorrow, as the Lord allows us to find private solutions to the power system.

Dear Lord, fill me with the knowledge of Your love, so that every manipulative concept people have taught will lose its grip on me, and my heart will not be hardened towards Your ways, in the name of Jesus.
