Faith Or Presumption

FAITH OR PRESUMPTION

Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” 

One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding. Acts 19:13, 15-16 NIV

HAPPY DAY TO YOU: One of the most misunderstood principles in the Christian faith is the issue of faith. I find that there is no clear definition to it because faith is life. It is often confused with presumption. Let me give a simple but common example of presumption.

My niece believed I had money to buy a phone for her. She took the phone on credit promising to pay within a week without obtaining my permission. When she told me, I didn't have such money so she ran into trouble with the phone vendor. What she did was not faith but presumption. Unfortunately, we do the same thing with God. A man of God says he has not used any medication for fifty years, not even paracetamol. People decide to follow his example and so many people lose their lives. Or the man of God says everyone should put all the money on them in the offering bowl and they will have the money multiplied. People did without considering paying their fare home. Presumption leads to failure.

The Jews in the text today attempted to use the name of Jesus to cast out a demon without authority. The demon asked them who they were because he did not know them. He beat them and tore their clothes and they went home naked.

For the word of God to profit anyone, it must mix with faith check Hebrews 4:2. Faith of Christ comes by hearing His gospel. Whatever you do with the faith of Christ is not just by repeating what others say or do but by hearing and obeying Christ who speaks to your heart too. Jesus lives in each person who believes in Him. It is for each of us to know how He speaks and authorises him.

I pray today that you will labour to know the voice of Christ who resides in your heart in the name of Jesus.
