In Whose Likeness

October 26. Jeremiah ch. 8–9; 1 Timothy 3

IN WHOSE LIKENESS?

“When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son in his own likeness, after his own image; and he named him Seth.” Genesis 5:3 BSB

HAPPY DAY TO YOU: Yesterday, we saw that Adam chose another likeness when he was tricked into disobeying God in the Garden of Eden. Eve was told that they would not die by eating the fruit God had forbidden them to eat, but that they would live and become like God, knowing good and evil. Eve saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eye, and desirable for obtaining wisdom, so she took and ate it and gave it to her husband. Genesis 3:6 So, man chose Satan's deceit over God's command and became independent of God. He could now create after his own image and likeness outside of God. In our text today, it is recorded that Adam had a son after his likeness and in his own image.

It is this choice to disobey God that shows whom a man is serving. This is why Jesus said that no one can serve two masters in Matthew 6:24. The person or thing that you choose to obey is your master, and you are his servant.

This implies that man's master needs to change from his heart, from within him. Read Jeremiah 31:31–34; Ezekiel 11:19; 36:26. God takes away the heart of stone from man and replaces it with a heart of flesh. He inscribes His statutes in man's heart so that he will obey God. This is what happens when a man accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. He receives a new heart that is yielded to God. Jesus said that no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he does the will of his Father. The Spirit of God enables man to obey the commandments of God, which the observance of external rituals alone cannot achieve. If you perform external rituals and observe doctrines while your heart is far from God, you are not serving God. This also explains why people speak of God, Jesus, and Christianity without any change in their character and lives. MAN CAN ONLY SERVE GOD IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH. I leave you to think about this and ask yourself if you are serving God in spirit and in truth. If you are not sure, then pray and ask God to replace your heart of stone with a heart of flesh, put a new spirit within you, and put His laws in your heart.

Dear Lord and Father, we need a revival in the world. Move and replace our hearts of stone with hearts of flesh that surrender to Your commands. Things we create in our own likeness and image are destroying us. Touch us to return to You, in the name of Jesus.
