HAPPY DAY TO YOU: Yesterday, we heard Jesus say that gentiles worry and labour for what to eat, drink and wear. Today, He tells his disciples what they are to labour for that attracts an addition of what to eat, drink and wear. As this is a common scripture that we have all misunderstood at one point in our Christian walk, let us look deeply into it.

What is the kingdom of God? For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Romans 14:17 BSB

The kingdom of God is a matter of righteousness (pleasing God), peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. So the labour in the kingdom of God is by locating and doing the will of God in any and every situation. It comes from the heart and the battle there is a fierce one. Take for example you are facing a serious financial problem. Then an opportunity to cheat and make a lot of money comes up in your workplace. Your immediate attitude would be ‘no one will notice’ seize this opportunity it is 'God's provision'. This is the work. To remain faithful to God and deny yourself the ‘easy’ option of getting rich and standing by righteousness is real labour for the kingdom of God. To choose good over evil is hard work of faith. Isaiah 32:17 says the work of righteousness is peace. If we could follow after righteousness, there will be peace and quiet confidence.

When the prosperity message first came, we were told that the church is the kingdom of God and to put your resources there through tithes and offerings was seeking the kingdom of God. Many if not most people followed the preachers’ teachings and they were left worse than before they started practicing the prosperity principle. I remember vividly that we were not taught about offering that God would not accept. Only the pastor enjoyed such offerings and tithes. We shall discuss unacceptable tithes and offerings from scriptures one day as the Spirit leads us.

I pray that as you meditate on the kingdom of God, your eyes will open to the way of righteousness, peace and joy.
